How Bundles, Cross-sell, Free Gifts and Upsells Combine at Checkout
How Product Bundle, Cross-sell, Free Gift and Upsell campaigns share a cart with your other discounts: order, best deal vs. stack, overlaps and limits.
Updated November 1, 2026
Product Bundle, Cross-sell, Free Gift and Upsell campaigns are designed to work on top of your regular discount campaigns. A customer can get a 10% sale price on one item, a bundle reward on a set, and a free gift in the same cart. This article explains the order Discount Prime works through a cart, how it makes sure nothing is discounted twice, and the limits that apply.
The Order Discounts Are Worked Out
At checkout, Discount Prime looks at the cart in this order:
Buy X Get Y rewards are set aside first. Units given away by Buy X Get Y never fill a bundle slot and don't count toward any other minimum, including free shipping.
Item discounts: flat, tiered quantity and other per-item price discounts.
Free Gift: gift lines are claimed first, so a gift is never also used to complete a set.
Product Bundle: units fill slots in cart order.
Cross-sell: offer lines are discounted when the trigger is in the cart.
Upsell: the upgrade incentive is applied to lines swapped in by the widget.
Tiered Spend (Order) and wholesale whole-cart discounts.
A unit is never used twice
Each unit in the cart can be used by only one bundle, cross-sell, gift or upsell reward. If the same shirt could complete two bundles, the first bundle takes it and the second one needs another shirt. When several campaigns of the same type could use a unit, the oldest campaign goes first.
Best Deal Wins vs. Stack on Product Discounts
Bundle, Cross-sell and Upsell campaigns each have a Combine with other discounts setting that decides what happens when an item already has a Discount Prime price discount:
Option | What the customer gets |
|---|---|
Best deal wins (default) | Whichever saving is bigger: the set/offer reward or the item's own discount. Never both. |
Stack on product discounts | The reward is applied on top of the already discounted price. |
Worked example
A suit ($300), shirt ($80) and shoes ($120) form a bundle with 25% off the set. The shirt is also in a Flat Product Discount that lowers it to $72.
Best deal wins | Stack on product discounts | |
|---|---|---|
Set is priced from | Original prices: $500 | Discounted prices: $492 |
Bundle reward | 25% of $500 = $125, minus the $8 the shirt already saved | 25% of $492 = $123 |
Customer pays | $375 | $369 |
With Best deal wins, the reward is always worked out from the original price and the existing sale is counted toward it, so the customer gets the better of the two, never a double discount. Free gifts are always 100% off and have no combine setting.
Rules Worth Knowing
Discount codes don't trigger these offers. Bundle, cross-sell, free gift and upsell rewards come from the automatic Discount Prime discount, never from a discount code campaign.
Hand-built sets count. A customer who adds every bundle item one by one gets the bundle reward, just like a customer who uses the Add set to cart button.
Cross-sell minimums are checked at checkout. The widget may show an offer slightly before Min quantity or Min spend is reached; the discount only applies once the condition is met.
Free gift thresholds are measured after flat and tiered item discounts but before bundle, cross-sell and upsell rewards. Gift lines never count toward the threshold.
Upsell incentives apply only to units the customer swapped using the upsell widget.
Combo bundle products (bundles published as a product) are never discounted again by other campaigns.
Overlaps Between These Campaigns
Campaign type | Can a product be in more than one? |
|---|---|
Product Bundle | Yes. Bundles can share products freely. At checkout, the older bundle takes a shared unit first. |
Cross-sell | No. A product can be in only one live cross-sell campaign. |
Upsell | No. A product can be in only one live upsell campaign. |
Free Gift | No. A product can be in only one live free gift campaign. |
These four types never conflict with your price discount campaigns (Flat, Tiered Quantity, Wholesale and so on), so adding a bundle never removes products from a sale.
You will see a warning, not a block, when two live free gift campaigns give away the same item, or when two live bundles use the same storefront title.
Limit: 25 live campaigns
A store can have up to 25 live Product Bundle, Cross-sell, Free Gift and Upsell campaigns combined. You can create and schedule more, but activating a campaign beyond the limit is blocked until another one ends or is deactivated.
Mini FAQ
Can a customer get a bundle reward and a free gift in the same order?
Yes. They are separate rewards. The gift is claimed first, and the gift item is never used to complete the bundle.
Why didn't the bundle discount stack with my sale price?
The bundle is set to Best deal wins, so the customer gets whichever saving is bigger. Switch it to Stack on product discounts to apply the reward on top.
Does a discount code remove the bundle discount?
A discount code campaign never applies bundle, cross-sell, gift or upsell rewards. Those always come from the automatic Discount Prime discount.
Two bundles share a product. Which one wins?
Both stay live. At checkout the older bundle uses the shared unit first; the newer bundle needs another unit to complete.
