What Is It?
A Free Gift campaign adds a gift to the cart at $0 when the customer's spend crosses a threshold. A progress bar (or a toast) tells customers how close they are. The widget adds and removes the gift automatically, and the discount function independently re-checks the threshold before pricing the gift at $0.

How It Works
Qualifying purchase
You choose what counts toward the threshold under Count spend on: Any product, Specific products, a Collection, Product tag, Vendor, or Product type. Once per order controls whether the gift is added once per order.
The threshold is measured on the price the customer pays, after other discounts, so a sale never makes a customer lose a gift because of the sticker price. This is fixed behavior, not a setting.
Gift tiers
Each tier has:
| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Spend at least | The threshold for this tier |
| Gift mode | Add automatically or Customer picks (Ultimate) |
| Picks | How many gifts the customer may choose (Customer picks only) |
| Gifts | Up to 6 gift products per tier |
Prime allows one tier. Ultimate allows up to 5 tiers (each threshold must be higher than the one before) and Customer picks.
Safety rules (fixed)
- Only $0 items are auto-added.
- Gift lines are invisible to other campaigns. A gift never counts toward another threshold, bundle, cross-sell, or free shipping.
- Out of stock = skipped. If a gift variant has no stock, the widget offers the next gift in the tier or hides the tier, and the campaign list shows a warning.
- Function verifies, widget maintains. A gift left in a cart that no longer qualifies gets no discount and the widget removes it on the next cart change.
Storefront display
| Display | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Progress bar | A persistent bar showing the distance to the next gift |
| Toast notification | A brief pop-up when the gift unlocks, with undo |
| Silent | The gift just appears in the cart at $0 |
At a Glance
| Free Gift | Buy X Get Y (free gift type) | |
|---|---|---|
| Reward trigger | Spend threshold, with tiers | Spend threshold (single) |
| Progress bar / toast | Yes | Popup only |
| Customer chooses gift | Yes (Ultimate) | No |
| Gift counts toward other campaigns | Never | Follows BOGO rules |
| Best for | AOV, spend ladders | Simple one-off gifts |
When to Use It
| Goal | Example |
|---|---|
| Lift average order past a line | Spend $75, get a travel serum |
| Move several order clusters | $75 keychain, $150 socks, $250 bottle |
| Customers disagree on taste | Spend $60, choose 1 of 4 gifts |
| Thank wholesale accounts | Spend $1,000 on your vendor, get a branded kit |
Step-by-Step: Create a Free Gift Campaign
Scenario Used in This Guide
Goal: Orders of $75 or more get a travel serum added free, with a progress bar on the storefront. Type: Free Gift, one tier, Add automatically, Progress bar.
Step 1: Go to Create Campaign
Click Campaigns → Create Campaign.
Step 2: Choose Campaign Type
Click the Free Gift card.

Step 3: Pick a Scenario (Optional)
| Scenario | Pre-fills |
|---|---|
| Spend & get a gift | One threshold, one gift, added automatically (this guide) |
| Spend more, get more | Multiple thresholds, each a better gift (Ultimate) |
| Let them choose | Customer picks from a short list (Ultimate) |
| Wholesale thank-you gift | Segment-limited gift (Ultimate) |
Step 4: Name and Storefront Title
Enter a Campaign name and a Storefront title (shown on the bar and gift card), for example Your free gift.
Step 5: Set the Qualifying Purchase
Under Qualifying purchase choose Count spend on (and the picker if it is not Any product) and keep Once per order on.

Step 6: Build the Tiers
Under Gift tiers, set Spend at least (for this guide $75), Gift mode (Add automatically), and pick the gift product with Browse (up to 6).

Add more tiers with Add tier (Ultimate). The builder warns if thresholds are out of order.
Step 7: Choose the Storefront Display
Pick Progress bar, Toast notification or Silent, then Manage widget settings for text and colors (see Free Gift Widget).
Step 8: Customer Eligibility (Optional)
By default every customer qualifies. Limiting to segments needs Ultimate.
Step 9: Schedule & Save
Set dates and click Save.

Step-by-Step: Verify the Campaign Works
Test Scenario
Campaign: Spend $75 → Travel Serum ($18) free.
Verification Table
| Cart | Expected |
|---|---|
| $40 of products | Bar: "$35 more for your free gift". No gift |
| $80 of products | Gift added at $0. Bar: unlocked |
| $80, then remove $20 of products | Gift removed on the next cart change |
| $80 cart in a sale ($70 after discounts) | No gift (measured after discounts) |
| Gift out of stock | Tier hidden, warning in campaign list |
Step 1: Stay Below the Threshold
Confirm the bar shows the remaining amount and no gift is added.
Step 2: Cross the Threshold
Add products until the total passes $75. The gift line appears at $0.00 with a "Free gift" label.

Step 3: Drop Back Below
Remove items. The gift disappears. Even if it stayed in the cart for a moment, it is not discounted.
Step 4: Check Isolation
Confirm the gift does not count toward free-shipping or any other threshold.
Tips & Common Mistakes
- Use Free Gift, not a BOGO, for threshold gifts. The bar is what moves the order, a checkout surprise doesn't.
- Thresholds are on discounted prices. Set them with sale prices in mind.
- Match the display to your theme. If your theme already has a shipping bar, use Toast instead of a second bar.
- Watch stock. The campaign list flags an out-of-stock gift.
- Don't expect the gift to count toward free shipping or another campaign.
- Rotate gifts for loyal customers who order often, so they don't receive the same one repeatedly.
- Limit wholesale with eligibility so a $1,000 dealer gift isn't shown to retail shoppers.
Mini FAQ
Can the customer remove the gift?
Yes, they can remove it from the cart. If the cart still qualifies after the next cart change, the widget may add it again, so use eligibility or a different threshold if you want customers to be able to decline a gift.
Can I give more than one gift?
Yes: several gifts in one tier (each added), several tiers (Ultimate), or Customer picks.
Which plan do I need?
One tier, Add automatically, is on Prime and above. Multiple tiers, Customer picks, and eligibility beyond all customers need Ultimate.
Why didn't the gift appear?
The cart is likely below the threshold after discounts, the gift is out of stock, or the customer isn't eligible.
Best for: Retail & DTC stores lifting average order value; wholesale stores thanking large accounts.
