Adding Product Costs and Cost Sync for Profit Tracking
Profit tracking needs a Cost per item on each variant. Add missing costs from inside Discount Prime and learn how the nightly cost sync updates orders.
Updated November 1, 2026
Discount Prime shows profit, not just revenue, for every discounted order. To do that it needs each variant's Cost per item from Shopify. This article shows how to fill in missing costs without leaving the app, and how cost changes reach your reports.
Why Costs Matter
Without a cost, an order's profit can't be calculated and it won't be colored red, yellow or green.
Profit protection settings (for example, a minimum margin on a bundle) can't protect a variant with no cost.
Campaign cards and the summary show cost coverage, such as Costs: 18/24 variants, so you can see what's missing.
Add Missing Costs From Inside the App
Look for Add costs (in a campaign's cost line) or the missing-costs prompt in Analytics.
Enter the Cost per item for each listed variant.
Save. Discount Prime writes the costs to the variants' Cost per item field in Shopify, so they're also available in Shopify reports.
You can also enter costs directly in Shopify Admin on each product's variant. Either way works.
How Cost Sync Works
When | What happens |
|---|---|
Every night at your store's local midnight | Costs are re-read from Shopify and orders from the last 30 days are recalculated with the current costs. |
When you click Calculate again on an order | That order is recalculated with current costs, whatever its age. |
So if you add a missing cost today, orders from the past 30 days update overnight. For older orders, use Calculate again.
Profit Colors
Profit is colored using Settings → Performance color thresholds:
Red (Loss): margin below 0% by default.
Yellow (Thin margin): below 20% by default.
Green (Healthy): 20% or more.
Change the cutoffs to match your business. The same colors are used on campaign cards, top performers and recent orders.
Mini FAQ
I added costs but old orders still show no profit. Why?
The nightly sync only recalculates the last 30 days. Open an older order and click Calculate again.
Does adding costs in Discount Prime change Shopify?
Yes. Costs are saved to the variant's Cost per item field in Shopify.
When does the sync run?
Once a day at your store's local midnight, based on the time zone in your Shopify settings.
