How Discount Prime Applies Discounts: Price Updates vs. Checkout Discounts
Some Discount Prime campaigns change your Shopify prices, others apply at checkout through one automatic discount. Learn which is which and why it matters.
Updated November 1, 2026
Discount Prime gives customers savings in two different ways. A few campaign types change the product price in Shopify directly. All the others leave your prices alone and apply the saving at cart and checkout through a single automatic discount the app manages for you. Knowing which way a campaign works explains how it shows on your storefront, how it combines with other discounts, and what happens when you pause it or remove the app.
The Two Methods at a Glance
Price update | Checkout discount | |
|---|---|---|
Campaign types | Flat Product Discount, Bulk Price Update, Dropshipping Pricing | Every other type: Tiered Quantity, Product Spend, Tiered Unit Pricing, Wholesale / B2B, Buy X Get Y, Free Shipping, Tiered Spend (Order), Product Bundle, Cross-sell, Free Gift, Upsell |
What changes in Shopify | The variant's price and compare-at price | Nothing on the product. One automatic discount named Discount Prime calculates the saving |
Where the customer sees it | Everywhere the theme shows a price, including collection pages and feeds | In the cart and at checkout, plus Discount Prime widgets on the storefront |
When the campaign ends | Original prices and compare-at prices are restored | The saving simply stops being applied |
Price Update Campaigns
Flat Product Discount, Bulk Price Update and Dropshipping Pricing write a new price (and usually a compare-at price for the strikethrough) onto each variant in the campaign. Because the price itself changes, the sale price shows on product pages, collection pages, search results and sales channels, and no discount line appears at checkout.
When you deactivate, pause or end one of these campaigns, Discount Prime writes the original prices back. On a store with under 1,000 SKUs this usually takes around 30 seconds; bigger catalogs take longer.
⚠️ If you uninstall the app while a price update campaign is still live, the changed prices stay on your products. Always pause these campaigns first. The Safe uninstall page does this for you.
Checkout Discount Campaigns
Every other campaign type runs through one automatic discount that Discount Prime creates in Shopify Admin → Discounts. It is titled Discount Prime. All of your checkout-based campaigns share this one discount, and it works out the right saving for each cart using your live campaign settings.
Your product prices never change, so the saving appears as a discount line in the cart and at checkout.
Storefront widgets (price tables, progress bars, bundle and cross-sell blocks) show customers what they will save before checkout.
When the campaign ends, nothing needs to be restored.
Do not delete the Discount Prime automatic discount
If the Discount Prime automatic discount is deleted or edited by hand, your checkout campaigns stop applying. The app keeps exactly one copy, removes accidental duplicates, and runs a daily self-check that recreates it if it goes missing, but deleting it can still interrupt discounts until the next repair. If you are cleaning up old discounts in Shopify, leave this one in place.
Campaigns that use a discount code also create a matching code in Shopify Discounts. Leave those in place too; Discount Prime manages them.
Why This Matters
Combining with Shopify discounts
Price update campaigns lower the product price itself, so any Shopify discount the customer uses is calculated on the already lower price. Checkout discount campaigns follow Shopify's combination rules for automatic discounts. See Combining Discount Prime with Shopify Discounts for the details.
Uninstalling
Only price update campaigns leave anything behind after an uninstall. Checkout discounts stop working as soon as the app is removed. Pause every live campaign before uninstalling so your prices are restored first.
Seeing the sale price on collection pages
Only price update campaigns change the price shown on collection pages. For checkout-based campaigns, use the Sales badge or the Quantity/Value table widget to advertise the offer before the cart.
