If your store sells in more than one currency through Shopify Markets, every dollar figure you set in Discount Prime, spend thresholds, fixed discounts, price floors, is defined in your store's base (shop) currency. Discount Prime automatically converts each shopper's actual cart total back to that base currency, using Shopify's live exchange rate, before checking it against your number. You never need to set separate thresholds per currency.
HOW THE CONVERSION WORKS
1. You set a number like "spend $100" on a Tiered Spend Discount or Free Shipping campaign. That $100 is always in your shop's base currency (e.g. USD), regardless of which currency a shopper is browsing in.
2. When a shopper checks out in a different currency (e.g. CAD), Shopify provides a live presentment currency rate, the current exchange rate for that cart.
3. Discount Prime converts the shopper's presentment-currency cart total back to your shop currency using that live rate, then compares the result to your threshold.
Example: Your threshold is $100 USD. The live CAD to USD rate is 1.39. A shopper checking out in CAD needs to spend roughly $139 CAD (which converts to $100 USD) to cross the threshold, this happens automatically.
WHERE THIS APPLIES
- Spend thresholds (Tiered Spend, Product Spend, Free Shipping minimums): compared after converting the shopper's cart total to your shop currency
- Fixed dollar discounts ($ off): calculated and applied using your shop currency, converted for the shopper's presentment currency
- Price floors / minimum margin (Dropshipping Pricing, Wholesale margin protection): enforced in shop currency, converted the same way
STEP-BY-STEP: VERIFY IT'S WORKING CORRECTLY
1. Set a spend threshold on a Tiered Spend Discount or Free Shipping campaign, e.g. $100.
2. If you sell in multiple currencies via Shopify Markets, open your storefront in an Incognito tab and switch to a different market/currency.
3. Add products until the local-currency subtotal is roughly equivalent to your threshold at the current exchange rate, not the same raw number.
4. Confirm the discount or reward applies once you cross that converted equivalent.
TIPS & COMMON MISTAKES
- Don't assume a customer needs to spend the raw number of your threshold in their own currency. A $100 threshold does not mean 100 units of every currency, it means the current converted equivalent.
- Exchange rates are Shopify's live rates at checkout, not something you configure in Discount Prime, so the local-currency amount needed can shift slightly as rates move.
- This applies automatically. There's no setting to turn it on or off, and you don't need separate campaigns per currency or market.
- This is the same mechanism used everywhere a dollar figure is compared or applied, not just spend thresholds, fixed discounts and margin floors are converted the same way.
MINI FAQ
Do I need to set a different threshold for each currency I sell in?
Do I need to set a different threshold for each currency I sell in?
No. Set one threshold in your shop's base currency, Discount Prime converts it automatically for every presentment currency a shopper checks out in.
Why did my customer's cart show a different local-currency amount than I expected?
Why did my customer's cart show a different local-currency amount than I expected?
That's the live exchange rate converting your base-currency threshold, it's expected behavior, not a bug. Compare using the current rate rather than assuming a 1:1 conversion.
Does this affect fixed dollar discounts too, not just spend thresholds?
Does this affect fixed dollar discounts too, not just spend thresholds?
Yes. Any dollar amount you configure, a fixed discount, a price floor, or a minimum margin, is treated as your shop's base currency and converted the same way for every presentment currency.
Where do the exchange rates come from?
Where do the exchange rates come from?
Shopify's own live presentment currency rates provided at checkout, Discount Prime doesn't set or store its own exchange rates.
Best for:
Any store selling in multiple currencies through Shopify Markets that wants to understand why threshold amounts look different at checkout.
